Region and its Surrounding

ORAVA

The Orava region is situated in the direct vicinity of Zázrivá, enveloped by Poland and mountain ranges of Západné Tatry, Chočské vrchy, Malá Fatra and Veľká Fatra. It is 42 km far.

You can see many historical or cultural monuments and natural assets in Orava. All the waters in the Orava region are collected by the Orava River. The people tamed this river in a water dam named Oravská priehrada to prevent frequent floods in many villages. The water dam is the largest water body and its area is 35 km2. It can be used for water sports in the summer months, such as yachting, surfing, water skiing, water bikes, recreational rowing and swimming… Also fishermen coming here to catch carps, jack fish, zander and Danube salmon can pursue their hobby here.

    

You can take a ship to the Slanický island with a gallery – collection of folk art named “Slovak traditional folk plastic art and paintings”. The expositions includes an outdoor lapidarium of stone plastic arts. You are recommended to visit the church, which used to be a dominant building of the immersed village. It was used as a chapel in the past. Classical music concerts “Music Summer” take place in the sacral place of the church every year in June and July.

DOLNÝ KUBÍN

There is a wooden Protestant Articular Church from 1681 in the village of Istebné nearby (direction to Dolný Kubín). In the centre of the town of Dolný Kubín you can walk square (Hviezdoslavovo námestie) and visit a literary museum of P. O. Hviezdoslav or the District House housing the Orava Gallery focusing on Slovak fold art and naïve art from the 15^th – 19^th century. An interesting feature is Kolonádny most (Colonnade Bridge) connecting Malý Bysterec and the old town. Dolný Kubín is 20 km far.

ORAVSKÝ PODZÁMOK, ORAVA CASTLE

The Orava Castle is one of the most popular sites of cultural heritage in Slovakia. It ranks among the most significant monuments of castle architecture. It towers majestically over the Orava River and over the Oravský Podzámok municipality.

THERMAL OPEN-AIR SWIMMING POOL ORAVICE - MEANDER PARK

Oravice is a famous site with natural geo-thermal water. The water springs from depth of more then 1 600 m and its temperature is 57 °C. The thermal water contains sulphur-calcium-magnesium salts with iron content. It has healing effects beneficial for diseases of the moving apparatus, urinary tract and kidneys.

ZUBEREC, OPEN-AIR MUSEUM OF THE ORAVA VILLAGE

A standing exposition of folk architecture is located under the Západné Tatry mountain range. The museum includes buildings from the entire region of Orava. Some houses were bought from original owners and moved to the open-air museum, where they were re-assembled.

ZÁPADNÉ TATRY - ROHÁČE

The Roháče mountains are the most popular part of the Západné Tatry mountain range. The whole area of Roháče is very famous for incredible beauty of its nature. The name Roháče (Horns) derives from the typical shape of the domineering peaks of Ostrý Roháč (2087 m) and Plačlivé (2125 m). The highest peak in Roháče is Baníkov (2184 m) in the main mountain ridge. Roháče belong to the Tatra National Park (TANAP) so you are kindly asked to follow TANAP rules when visiting Roháče.

VLKOLÍNEC

The village of Vlkolínec ranks among the UNESCO world’s cultural heritage sites. It is located in the Veľká Fatra national park. A unique set of 45 original, almost unaltered peasants’ timber houses is preserved in this village. The houses from the 16^th – 19^th century retain their original layout with three rooms. The village has about 20 inhabitants.

PRIBYLINA

The Liptov Village Museum is a detached exposition of the Liptov Museum in Ružomberok. There are buildings from the regions of Upper Liptov and Lower Liptov and from the villages immersed under the Liptovská Mara water dam.

    

BEŠEŇOVÁ – THERMAL OPEN-AIR SWIMMING POOL

A water facility open all the year round, offering comprehensive services. There are 7 open-air pools with thermal water, Vital World, Relax Centre. This water contains a number of minerals providing beneficial effects for the moving apparatus and airways and for urological problems.

    

AQUAPARK TATRALANDIA

The heart of the Aquapark Tatralandia a is source of thermal water flowing from the depth of more than 2500 m at temperature of 60,7 °C. Its healing water in the pools is unique from among the waters in the Liptov region. It contains part of marine waters from the Palaeogene sea covering the Liptov basin 40 million years ago. Tatralandia's mineral water has beneficial effects on the moving apparatus and airways.
